Our nurse was finally being attentive and becoming a willing participant in the event. There really wasn’t much for our nurse to do, but track vitals, etc. She finally had some time to answer our questions and share a bit about herself with us. She was only 25, from the East Coast, and an outsourced temp nurse contracted with the hospital. It was nice having her with us, but her shift was up at 11:00pm.
By 11:00 pm the labor was progressing slower than the pace my wife was pushed through the Emergency Room about 4 hours prior. We realized our nurse would not continue on this adventure with us.
Soon our nurse would introduce us to a new one. I hoped she would be equally as young and cute. Instead, we got experience. This new nurse hailed from South America, although she sounded practically Haitian, she had been on staff for 32 years and it showed.
I sensed this nurse had seen too many births in her life for our son’s to be anything more than another day at the office. I also had trouble understanding her accent, and judging from the number of times my wife had to repeat herself, she didn’t understand us either. I would’ve asked for another nurse, but I didn’t want to be offensive, and my wife was comforted by her 32 years of experience. Even though I think it was the drugs that were comforting her, I let it go.
